MERCIES IN DISGUISE
(Inspired by “Blessings” performed by Laura Story)
The lyrics of “Blessings” confront one of life’s hardest questions: what if God’s goodness is hidden inside the very trials we long to escape? The song asks, “What if Your blessings come through raindrops? What if Your healing comes through tears? What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You’re near?” These words remind us that God’s purposes often unfold in ways that confound human expectations.
Scripture echoes this paradox. James 1:2–3 calls believers to “consider it pure joy…whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” Trials are not evidence of God’s absence but instruments of His refining work. Through suffering, He strengthens endurance, deepens dependence, and reveals His nearness in ways comfort never could.
This perspective reshapes how we approach disappointment, pain, and unanswered prayers. Instead of viewing them as divine neglect, we can trust they may be God’s mercy in disguise—guardrails keeping us from lesser treasures and guiding us to Himself, the ultimate blessing. A closed door may protect us from harm. A prolonged wait may prepare us for fruitfulness. A sleepless night may drive us into prayer.
This does not minimize the ache of grief or the sting of loss. Rather, it proclaims that God is present in the storm, weaving even suffering into His sovereign plan for good. The cross of Christ proves this truth: what looked like ultimate defeat became the world’s greatest victory. If God can turn crucifixion into resurrection, He can transform today’s trials into eternal blessings.
PRAYER
Father, help me to trust that even in hardship, Your mercies are at work. Teach me to see Your hand in the unexpected and to rest in Your goodness when life feels heavy.
APPLICATION
When facing a challenge today, pause and ask: “How might this situation be God’s hidden mercy at work?” Let that question guide your response.
